The Beginnings of Pool

Pool and billiards are almost the same to some people especially those who don't know much about the games. It all began with billiards way back in the 1400's.

Many years ago, billiards was actually an outdoor game but it was called croquet. Only the high class could play the said game and since it could only be played outdoors, they couldn't have fun when it was raining. So they devised an indoor game that was just like the outdoor game and it was called billiards. King Louis XI was the very first person to introduce the billiards table in 1470. Royal circles enjoyed billiards very much especially when they were waiting for executions. Later on, the game became popular in inns and public rooms.

There were no specific rules at that time in playing billiards and it was only in the 1700's when the first instructions of the game were published. Back then, the billiards table only had arch to aim as targets but after some time the tables were made with pockets. The wooden implement was called mace but now it is known as the cue.

The English people played a combination of carom and pocketing while the French people played mainly carom billiards. Americans love pool games such as 8-ball, 9-ball, and straight balls.

At present, playing pool or billiards is a different thing. There are now technical advances - the cue tip now is made with leather; players use chalk to increase the friction between the ball and the cue tip; the introduction of rubber for the cushions and slate for the table beds. Because of these technical advancements, players find pool playing and billiards as a very good sport. World championship titles are being held to determine the best of all pool and billiards players. It is truly an honor to be included in the Hall of Fame of billiards. This may be the dream of all good pool players.

So what are you waiting for? Why don't you try to play pool or billiards now; this is really a great pastime for you and your friends. You can either go to public pool halls or you can have your very own pool table at home. If you're playing for fun, going out at least once a month with your friends is already enough; at least, you can have time to unwind and relax. Have a great time.
