Which Term Should You Use, Pool or Billiards?

Pool and billiards these two words are obviously spelled differently but oftentimes, the meaning is the same to most people. Perhaps only the experienced players of this sport know the main difference of the two terms. Which term should you use, pool or billiards? Well, this will greatly depend in the game that you're about to play.



These terms are searched online thousands of times everyday and the search results are somewhat related. The words are interchanged most of the time and somehow people hardly notice. Pool is oftentimes mistaken as billiards and vice versa. People are used to using the words interchangeably and so the meaning is almost the same.



Before you can tell which word to use, you have to determine first the difference between the two ball games. Basically, billiards is a general term and it is played in two styles. The first style is the carom billiards which is played in a pocket-less table and the second style is the pocket billiards wherein the table has six pockets. The size of the pool table is much smaller than the typical billiards table. The rules also differ in playing the two playing styles, as well as the game regulations.



So, what is the right term to use? Well, if you're playing on a table without pockets and scoring is based on bouncing of the balls you can call it carom billiards or simply billiards. If you're playing on a table with six pockets, you can call it pool or pocket billiards. Now, is everything clearer to you this time?



Once you know the differences in the two styles of playing billiards, you will know which term to use. You don't have to be an expert billiards or pool player because as long as you know this piece of information, not one person can tell you that the term you're using is wrong.
