Pool, Then and Now

Are the pool games of today the same as that of the pool games played many years ago? Well, it can have similarities but there are already differences. You will find out more as you read further.

You see, pool games and billiards were being played in the 1500's. Before, it is believed that only the bad boys of society played this game. In fact, governments and churches denounced billiards because they found it as a sinful activity. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson had a billiards table kept under the Monticello dome in Virginia?

It was only in the 1900's that people started using the word pool. Back then, pool rooms in the horserace track had billiard tables to pass the time. People then referred to billiard tables as pool tables. It was in 1903 that the coin-operated table was invented. In order to play, you had to pay a penny. Balls used then were made of ivory. In the 20th century, ivory balls were replaced with plastics and celluloid. Side cushions were made from a form of vulcanized rubber and the felt was from wool or wool-nylon. The pockets of the pool tables were either baskets or carriage systems (drop and return).

At present, pool is quite popular and in fact, tournaments are being held every year. By winning the tournament, you can get thousands to million of dollars.

Playing in pool halls can be pretty expensive especially if you play frequently. The best thing would be to invest in your very own pool table and accessories. This way, you can play any time you like and for as long as you like. You can invite friends over on weekends or you can play with your family members. Pool tables are available in stores in a wide range of prices. There are those that cost a hundred dollars or more but you can also find ones that cost thousands. All of these pool tables vary in style and quality. So make sure that you get a good deal.

People of today can play pool and billiards freely. There are no organizations or sectors that tell the players that what they're doing is wrong or sinful. This is a good thing about the modern world. For as long as you don't violate any rules and you don't meddle with other peoples business, you can play pool and have the greatest time of your life.
