Pool Cue Striking: What is Right or Wrong?

Most beginners think the overall appeal of a good strike depends on how strong the energy is deposited in drawing the cue. But ladies and gentlemen, they are wrong. The fact is, to produce a perfect shot; you must consider a lot of factors starting with:



The quality of the cue



A cue has its varieties, from the cheap ones to the expensive ones. Point is, if you really like playing pool, you should have your own pool cue. Be sure to pick one that portrays stability and quality. Some cheap cues tend to bend easily. You're lucky if they just bend. What if they break?



The angle you have chosen



You don't really choose your angle. Your body does. But sometimes, if you let your body be governed by your wrong principles on how to strike, it all goes wrong. You must let your body relax and be comfortable with the parameters of your shot. Forming a stiff and rigid angle causes your muscles to get stiff and rigid as well.



The point of striking



A beginner has this misconception that a strike containing all the energy he can incur can makes the goal. That would be right yet partly wrong. One of the greatest mistakes a novice can do is hit the cue ball at great risk but with a raised shooting arm. The stroke made by the arm is totally wrong. First, the force isn't directed at the ball but through the felt. Second, to point your ball directly at the center can cause the ball to move and hit a particular object ball but not save it from falling into one of the pits. The correct position of your tip must be just a few inches below the center. This will enable the ball to come back after the shot. And third, this kind of striking point can damage the mat and bend the cue. Minimize occurrences wherein the tip of your cue is pointing straight down to the felt like the masse.



Pressure points



The pressure is always on your striking arm. The way you grip a cue defines how the shot would portray. These areas that are usually used for shooting are the ones most affected by pressure therefore demanding more from what was already there. Try to control your shot by taking deep breaths before important shots.
